Milan with a dog: how to organize your stay

Traveling in Milan with a dog is possible, but it requires some extra care. Not all areas are equal in terms of spaces, sidewalks, greenery and ease of movement.

Dog in Milan - dog-friendly stay

Milan is a fairly dog-friendly city, but not uniformly so. Some areas are more livable due to wide sidewalks, nearby parks, and less traffic, while others are more chaotic and less suitable.

The practical tip: Choosing a quiet, well-connected area makes staying with your dog much more manageable. Evaluate the presence of green areas within walking distance, the width of sidewalks, and the level of traffic.
Note: HÕMA Porta Venezia does not accept pets because of the carpeting. All other HÕMA facilities are pet-friendly.

Practical advice

Morning and evening walks are essential when traveling with your dog. Cinque Giornate and Porta Vittoria have green areas in the neighborhood that are easily accessible on foot. From HÕMA Spiga, the Indro Montanelli Gardens are a 10-minute walk away.
Dogs are allowed on the Milan metro if carried in a bag or container (free) or on a leash with a muzzle (full fare). On streetcars and buses the same rules. For short walks in residential neighborhoods, getting around on foot is always the best option - less stress for the dog and more time to explore. Read the Getting Around Milan Without a Car guide for details on transportation.
The historic center at peak hours (Duomo, Galleria, Navigli in the evening) is very crowded and chaotic-not ideal for dogs. If you want to visit these areas, choose quieter times: early morning or early afternoon on weekdays. Semi-central areas like Cinque Giornate and Porta Vittoria have much more livable rhythms.
With a dog, days have different rhythms: morning walks, longer lunch breaks, evening returns. HÕMA self check-in is available 24/7 - you can return anytime without time constraints. This makes managing your stay much more flexible.
Before booking restaurants, bars or businesses, check whether they accept dogs. Many outdoor establishments in Milan allow them, but indoor ones often do not. Contact us via WhatsApp before arrival for any specifics about the facility and nearby pet-friendly services.

Frequently asked questions

Fairly so. Residential areas such as Cinque Giornate, Porta Vittoria and Certosa are more livable for dogs than the historic center. Parks are present in almost all neighborhoods. Indoor venues accept dogs less than abroad, but outdoor venues often do.
Depends on the dog. The historic center is chaotic and crowded, especially on weekends. For quiet dogs accustomed to the city, it can work. For more relaxed stays, semi-central areas such as Cinque Giornate or Porta Vittoria are more suitable.
Walking is always the best choice. For subway: dogs in bag free, on leash with muzzle with regular ticket. On streetcars and buses same rules. For long trips around town, cab or car sharing are more comfortable options with a medium or large dog.
Yes - Milan has several parks. Sempione Park (near Castello Sforzesco) is the largest and very dog-friendly. Indro Montanelli Gardens are 10 minutes from HÕMA Spiga. Cinque Giornate and Porta Vittoria have neighborhood green areas within easy walking distance.
HÕMA Five Days is the best choice - spacious apartments, quiet neighborhood, residential pace. Ideal for those staying a week or more. Porta Vittoria is a great alternative with the rail passante to get around the whole city.
Not necessarily. With a small or medium-sized dog, it is possible to get around just fine on foot and by transportation. For large dogs, a car may be more convenient for some out-of-town trips. If you arrive by car, read the guide getting to Milan by car to avoid problems with ZTL and parking.
