Getting to Milan by car: ZTL, parking lots and how not to get fines

A practical guide to entering the city, parking and choosing the right area without risking fines.

ZTL Milan - crossings and restricted traffic zones

Getting to Milan by car is possible, but it requires a minimum of attention. The problem is not so much the traffic, but the LTZs, electronic gates and reserved lanes, which are often not very obvious to those unfamiliar with the city.

Many fines come not because you park badly, but because you enter a no-parking zone without realizing it, following the navigator or generic directions such as "downtown" or "Duomo."

The practical tip: Choose where to sleep based on access by car. Suburban or semi-central areas such as Certosa, Cinque Giornate and Porta Vittoria are much easier to reach and manage than the historic center.

How it really works

Milan has several traffic restrictions, especially in central areas. The main ones to be aware of:

The main restrictions
Area CCentral pay zone - active Mon-Fri 7:30am-7:30pm. Need pass or daily payment.
ZTLLimited traffic zones in various areas of the city. Access prohibited without authorization, active gates H24 or in time slots.
Area BProhibition of access for the most polluting vehicles (Euro 0-3 diesel, Euro 0-1 gasoline). Active Mon-Fri 7:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m.
Reserved lanesReserved for buses, streetcars and cabs. Driving through them with a car is sanctioned.
ParkingYellow stripes = residents. Blue stripes = paid. White stripes = free (rare downtown).

Critical areas if you arrive by car

StructureWhy it is critical in the carZTL riskBest to avoid it if
HÕMA Spiga - Quadrilateral.ZTL very restrictive, crossings often activeVery highArrivals by car without precise instructions
HÕMA Porta Venezia.Variable traffic, access and gates to be verifiedMediumDonÕt want to manage ZTL or access times

These areas are not to be ruled out a priori, but they do require attention if you arrive by car. Checking access and parking is critical.

Practical advice

Google Maps and Waze do not always report active LTZs or electronic toll gates. Always check the exact address of your hotel and see if it is in a restricted zone before you leave.
If you want to visit the historic center, the best strategy is to park in a suburban area (Certosa, Cinque Giornate, Famagosta) and take the subway. It costs less, stresses less. Read the guide Getting around Milan without a car.
If you have a Euro 3 or lower diesel vehicle, you may not be able to enter Area B (which covers most of Milan). Check the category of your vehicle on the City of Milan website before you leave.
Areas near highway exits (Certosa for the A4/A8, Cinque Giornate for the eastern bypass) have reasonably priced parking facilities and immediate metro access.
No, but facilities outside ZTL (Certosa, Cinque Giornate, Porta Vittoria) have public and private parking nearby at affordable rates. Contact us via WhatsApp for exact directions on your arrival date.

Area C is the limited traffic zone in the historic center of Milan. A daily pass (about €5) is needed to enter it with a private vehicle. It operates Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., excluding holidays. You pay online at the City of Milan's website or at the ATM columns.
Look up the exact address on the City of Milan website in the "Access by car" section. Alternatively, contact us via WhatsApp with your arrival address and we will tell you right away if there are any restrictions.
There are several public and facility parking lots in the vicinity of Viale Espinasse. The area is outside ZTL and outside Area C - there are no access restrictions. Contact us via WhatsApp for updated options.
Yes. In the areas outside ZTL (Certosa, Cinque Giornate, Porta Vittoria) there are parking lots with daily or weekly rates. Once parked, you can move around the city by subway without using your car again.
